Cheryl Young gives voice to Fibromyalgia’s silent suffering
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/25/cheryl-young-gives-voice-to-fibromyalgias-silent-suffering/article1804781/
Cheryl Young was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in 1992. Because the cause is unknown, diagnosis can be controversial, and symptoms can be mistaken for other illnesses - widespread pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons, fatigue and depression – Ms. Young realized she might have gone undiagnosed previously for more than a decade.
There is no known cause or cure for Fibromyalgia, which affects a small percentage of Canadians, but can have chronic, debilitating symptoms. Patients can suffer from constant pain, migraines and numbness, making simple daily tasks difficult or even impossible to bear.
Ms. Young founded The Fibromyalgia Well Spring Foundation, an organization dedicated to raising awareness and improving the quality of life for FM sufferers; it became an official registered charity in 2007.
The Foundation now has four support groups with a registration of over 150 members. Ms. Young, as executive director, works as moderator for all four groups.
She was the instrumental force behind the book Living with Fibromyalgia: The FM Phenomenon, published in 2008 by the Foundation as both a reference and self-help resource.
Last year, Ms. Young opened The Office, Drop in Centre and Thrift Shoppe in Langley, B.C., giving a public face to the Foundation and a place where sufferers, 85 per cent of whom are women, can gather and offer support.
Ms. Young puts in full-time volunteer hours, over forty per week and some weekends spent helping those at the Drop in Centre, giving presentations at health shows and educating the public about Fibromyalgia.
Nominator: Nigel Thom, Langley, B.C.
